**BASIC PRECAUTIONS**
As described in Chapter 5, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes to create and save a test file of just a few parts of a large image. If you’re working with a larger file, save it in stages so you can easily recall how the sections got where they are.

High-key and low-key images are often difficult to edit, and placing both on the same photo can make it even more difficult. Make sure you don’t have any high-key highlights in your photo.
If you’re using a similar filter to one used in a photo (called a _replacement filter_ in Photoshop) you want to be certain that the filter isn’t too similar to the colors in the photo. That may make it difficult to blend in the filter over other areas.
If you plan to lighten the photo, ensure that your exposure is correct. You can do this by going to File ▸ Open and selecting the correct exposure for the photo.
If you’re using the Automatic RGB or CMYK conversion settings, check that you have the RGB option selected and that the color profile is set to the default sRGB profile.
