Discovering the Basics of Photoshop
Everyone knows a few basic commands and what to expect from an image-editing program — but what you may not know is how all that information is organized and displayed on the screen.
An RGB-ready RGB image
Photoshop supports nearly any color, or at least any color that your monitor can handle, and stores color information as separate channels. The RGB channels are each a series of values that indicate the red, green, and blue content for a specific color. For example, an image with a red channel value of 255 and a green channel value of 124 is red and green with full intensity. If that’s red it’s pretty intense; if it’s full green, there is no more intense red to be seen. The most common color used for image editing is the red-green-blue value of 255, 128, 128, which represents pure red.
When you open an image in Photoshop, you see it with no colors indicated. Every color and every channel is an unknown value. Some programs indicate this channel content by using color. Photoshop doesn’t do this, so you have to understand that every channel has a channel content. For example, if you want to change a green channel value from 255 to 100, you have to remove the 255 by selecting either the channel or the color and then click the bottom portion of the channel to move it to 100. You can do the same thing with blue or red.
Zooming and panning
Zooming and panning are two of Photoshop’s most important tools for interacting with and manipulating images. They allow you to see close-ups of the image and move the entire image to a new location.
Zooming in
Zooming in is the process of magnifying an image to bring in new details. For example, by zooming into the thumbnail image in Figure 4-1, I can view details that aren’t readily apparent in the full-sized image.

Panning
Moving an image around on the screen is considered panning. For example, when I use the Zoom tool or use the scroll bar to scroll to the left or right, I am panning the image, as shown in Figure 4-2.

How to Install
Your computer may already come with Photoshop Elements installed. If that’s the case, Photoshop Elements will open automatically. However, if your computer doesn’t have Photoshop Elements installed, read on to learn how to install Photoshop Elements.
The easiest way to install Adobe Photoshop Elements is by downloading the installer. You’ll find an installer for Photoshop Elements on the Adobe site for Windows and Mac.
If you don’t want to download it, you can also install Photoshop Elements from the Adobe website.

# What Is a Brush?
A brush is a specially made set of pixels that can be used to create a finished, finished image. They can be used to paint, smooth out rough areas, paint over areas of a document, or add interesting effects. To create a brush, follow these steps:
1. **Click Edit** ⇒ **Stroke.**
The Brush Settings dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 1-2.
2. **Select a brush size from the Size list.**
The brush size setting is the number of pixels a brush contains. To change brush size, select one from the list.
3. **Click the Bucket or Drops icon in the Stroke Settings section to open a pallete of colors, or click the Brush Preset pop-up menu and select a preset color.**
Many presets for brush colors are available. If you have recently used a preset color with the Brush tool, Photoshop will suggest the color when you click the Brush Preset drop-down menu. If you do not find the color you want, click the Color Picker button and select a new color.

The lowland swan (Cygnus olor) is a small swan that lives along the coast of the United Kingdom.
Taxonomy and range
The lowland swan is a small cygnus swan and one of four different races in the genus Cygnus. It is often classified in C. cygnus, the others being the mute swan (C. columbianus), the black-bellied swan (C. melanogaster) and the Bewick’s swan (C. bewickii).
