Last September, Tim McDonagh, an aspiring computer-game designer who lives in Bulgaria, began work on a game that combined the board-game strategy of chess with the arcade challenges of the fight for survival of the fittest. He devoted his weekends to 3D-models of alien-shaped spaceships and spider-cockroach-looking aliens, and when the designs arrived, he found his confidence growing. He had joined a game-design community with members all across the world, most of them from the U.S., but for them, this was just a hobby, a creative outlet. For McDonagh, it was a different thing: He hoped his game, a future arcade hit called Lawnmower, would be his big break. For four years, McDonagh has been working long hours to make Lawnmower a success. And then one morning last September, he woke up and made a shocking discovery: He could not find it. The computer where he had been working on the game and sharing his ideas with the world had been hijacked by hackers. McDonagh called his game a “hollow shell.” Instead of the story he had been hoping for, he was reading in the newspaper about a Nigerian hacker who had allegedly plundered Twitter, causing a multibillion-dollar loss that had sent Microsoft’s share price plummeting.
