I am starting learning the basics of php and could not find any clear answers to a question I have regarding accessing the data of a variable from within a recursive function.
So for example:

I understand the reason why I can’t access the $myVar variable from the function and will explain further.
When the function is called for the first time (myRecursiveFunction(‘Hello’);) the variable is empty as it has not yet been assigned to anything.
How would I be able to assign a variable to the current function which then becomes accessible from the recursive function so that each time it’s called it’s looking at the latest (updated) variable?

When you enter the function myRecursiveFunction you don’t change the content of the variable myVar – that could be done by defining the function myRecursiveFunction with the content of the variable myVar (as noted by @Daniel Mann). But that would be just a shortcut, as you want to use the function myRecursiveFunction as a callback for your function myFunction. The problem is, that PHP, as M. Do said in his answer, can’t change the scope of variables in a function call.
Since the variable myVar is not in the global scope, you need to assign the content of myVar in your myFunction. One option to solve this is by assigning myVar to a variable in the global scope.
For example, you could set the content of myVar in the global scope of your script with the line
$myVar = ‘Hello World’;
and then redefine the function myFunction
function myFunction($arg) {
global $myVar;
echo “myFunction()”;
echo $myVar;
}
and call the function myFunction with myRecursiveFunction as callback. The result should be
