    Just like Dragon Ball Z, I originally started playing Dragon Ball FighterZ with my previous rankings and a few of my friends who also ranked in the top 100. We all had pretty high expectations from the game before it even came out. Like with Dragon Ball Z, we all knew that none of the fighters could really stand out as the best, but that we could all have fun playing the game.

    I can say from the very beginning that the game was a bit of a shock. Up until that point, I had no idea how stiff or loose the game was. I knew that Dragon Ball Z was a very loose fighting game, and I assumed that FighterZ was going to be just as loose. But as I played, I found the game to be actually quite stiff. Every character had individual moves that were low level attacks and had few hits, and some of them even had very few combos.

    My first strategy was to master the fighters I had no interest in, because I didn’t feel like I could pull any meaningful damage out of them. Then I progressed into the free characters. These were characters that didn’t really have their own moves that were related to other fighters, so I started to learn them slowly. I felt that I only really needed to focus on these characters, because they fit right in with the style of fighting.

    I wasn’t too surprised to see how stiff the free characters were, because the game can feel very balanced and random. This means that a fighter that is very light on hits will counter and punish a fighter that tries to hit as much as they can. That’s not to say that the level of balance is off in FighterZ though, because the fighters are actually very fun to play.

    Dragon Ball FighterZ is a lot like Dragon Ball Z. When you are in a normal match, you can see which fighter has a lot of energy. Then, when you are performing some kind of an attack, the character will flash in the middle of the screen. This is a great indicator of who has the energy for a counter and who has the energy to do damage. I felt like I could take advantage of this almost immediately.
